Instead of bringing back Kurt Cobain from the dead (via hologram), Dave Grohl and Friends are getting Sir Paul McCartney to front their Nirvana semi-reunion at tonight’s Sandy benefit concert.

According to The Sun and various other sources, McCartney will step in for the late frontman as Grohl’s friends, which include bassist and Nirvana co-founder Krist Novoselic and guitarist Pat Smear, reunite. A spokesperson for McCartney wouldn’t confirm if he was actually going to perform with the band, but didn’t deny the rumor.

“Everything will be revealed tonight,” the rep said.

Novoselic confirmed on his Twitter that the group will perform a new song, which he described as a “kind of ‘Helter Skelter’ meets ‘Scentless Apprentice’… with a heavy groove.” He also mentioned McCartney, calling him “powerful.” He didn’t blatantly confirm the rumor either, but why else would he name drop?

This will be the first time McCartney rocks out with the rest of Nirvana, but not the first time he jams with Grohl. In February, the two closed the Grammy Awards show with “Golden Slumbers,” “Carry That Weight” and “The End.”

12-12-12: The Concert for Sandy Relief will kick off at 7:30 p.m. EST and air on 37 television networks and 27 websites. The event is packed with the likes of the Rolling Stones, Kanye West, the Who, Billy Joel and Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band.

What do you think of this collaboration?
