Our prayers have been answered: The Clash have announced plans to release their entire back catalog in a boombox-shaped box set. The set, titled Sound System, is due out September 9th. It includes the band’s 1977′s The Clash, 1978′s Give ‘Em Enough Rope, 1979′s London Calling, 1980′s Sandinista!, and 1982′s Combat Rock.
Besides the band’s first five records, Sound System will also have three discs of singles, rarities, demos, and B-sides. There’s also a DVD featuring all of the band’s videos and some “unseen footage by Julien Temple and Don Letts.” There’s also reprints, a new issue of the band’s Armagideon Time fanzine, an exclusive poster, dog tags, stickers, badges, and much more. And not only is the box set great on the inside, but also on the outside. The boombox box was designed bybassist Paul Simonon. Even guitarist Mick Jones is calling Sound System the “best box set ever.”
Jones told The Guardian that there’s so much in the box set that we’ve never heard before.
“It was like discovering stuff, because the advances in mastering are so immense since the last time [the Clash catalogue] was remastered in the 90s… We had to bake the tapes beforehand– the oxide on them is where the music is, so if you don’t put them in the oven and bake them, that all falls off, because they’re so old.”
Here are two cool trailers announcing the release of the box set:
What do you think? Is this awesome or is this awesome?
