In response to Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong’s recent onstage meltdown—in which the singer launched a profanity-studded rant about his merits and longevity in the music industry, while decrying said industry and Justin Bieber, all because the contractually agreed-upon time to end the show had come and he didn’t feel like doing it—Alanis Morissette has elected to begin covering Green Day’s “Basket Case” live, and has spoken out in Armstrong’s defense.
After Armstrong went into rehab following the meltdown, Morissette, currently on her Havoc and Bright Lights tour, has begun covering the Green Day classic. The first performance was on Tuesday night’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, and she then played it again on the following Wednesday night in Pomona, California. Check it out:
The singer isn’t quite sure how long “Green Day” will remain a part of her touring set, as she notes the Kimmel performance was “super spontaneous” and that she and her band only learned it “like 11 minutes before we went on.”
Morissette went on to discuss her solidarity for Armstrong:
“I’ve always been an advocate and supporter of artists and Billie Joe to me — he deserves to be bowed down to…He’s been in this industry for a long time and so for him to experience the consequence of a system that kind of set it up for him to fail is a travesty to me.”
While one can understand Morissette’s sympathy, one could also argue that this is an industry that allowed Armstrong to make millions, and that his rant was sparked not my industry misdeeds, but because he felt like playing longer than had been contractually agreed upon.
What do you think of Morissette’s cover?
