Billy Corgan is known for having a contentious relationship with well, nearly everyone—Courtney Love, the media, his own band, etc—but this is pushing it. The former Smashing Pumpkins frontman (and current leader of the band that is still calling itself the Smashing Pumpkins) is being sued by a former Grey’s Anatomy actor because, get this, Corgan’s tree allegedly almost killed his wife. That’s right, Grey’s Anatomy actor Eric Dane (you know, the guy who just about everyone you ever hated referred to as “McSteamy) is suing Billy Corgan, as he claims that a tree owned by Corgan and growing on the singer’s property crashed into Dane’s home during a 2011 storm. The accident allegedly “nearly killed” Dane’s wife, actress Rebecca Gayheart, who was pregnant at the time. The couple’s 20 month old daughter was also in the home at the time. Dane also claims that the tree severed power lines and set off a sprinkler system which flooded their home. No one was injured.
Dane’s lawsuit also states that Corgan’s trees were “shaky and dangerous,” and that the singer had been warned about their unsafe nature.
Corgan has responded in a statement that the trees were not dangerous, and that he was “horrified” when he learned of the incident. He also noted that the lawsuit was a shame, “because they are nice people.”
